(Slybum marianum)

Description

Milk thistle is a powerful liver tonic and is used by herbalists to treat such liver disorders as cirrhosis and hepatitis.

The seeds are the most potent part of the plant and they contain an active ingredient called Silymarin. Apparently, Silymarin helps create new, healthy liver cells without encouraging the growth of any malignant liver tissue that may be present. Silymarin, is also an antioxidant, protecting liver cells from damage by free radicals. This active ingredient can be used by healthy people who can expect to have their liver ready and able to detoxify damaging substances much easier.

Milk thistle also is believed to ease outbreaks of psoriasis.

How It May Benefit You

Take milk thistle internally for:

  • liver problems, including cirrhosis and hepatitis.
  • inflammation of the gallbladder duct.
  • poisoning from ingestion of the death cup mushroom.
  • psoriasis.

Caution

Because taking milk thistle increases bile secretion, you may develop loose stools.

If you think that you have a liver disorder, seek medical advice.

WARNING:    Herbs should only be used under the supervision of an experienced herbalist or naturopath experienced in herbs.
